Captain

'Captain Stanislaw Mieszkowski (1903-1952) was a well-deserved officer of the Polish Navy. He oversaw the construction of Polish ships in the Frenchand English shipyards, During the defense of the coast in 1939 he commandeda group of gunboats. After returning from German captivity on the 8th of June in 1945, he began wok as the first Polish harbour master of the Kolobrzeg port. Later, he was the organizer and first commander of the NAval Officers School, chief of the General Staff of the Navy, and finally, the commander of the fleet. After 1949, there was a period of 'Stalinization' of public life in Poland; as result, dozens of generals and senior officers were arrested. They were placed behind false accusations and many were executed. Stanislaw Mieszkowski was arrested on the 20th of October in 1950 and on the 16th of December in 1952 a death sentence was carried out on him. After so-called 'Polish October' in 1956, he was completely rehabilitated. Through the efforts of the League of Maritime and River on the 29th of August 2003, a Port Square was named after Captain Stanislaw Mieszkowski. On the 23rd of June 2007 the monument was put up, and on the 26th of November 2009, a book was published about the Captain.'
